We wanted a name that was playful and meaningful at once. It turned out to hold three ideas.
தம்பி — thambi, little brother.
தமிழ் பாடம் — Thamba, short for Tamil Paadam.
தம் பா — split it, Tham-baa, and it means their own song.
Children pass levels to win sugarcane and balls, to feed him and play with him. As far as the teachers are concerned, they are learning Tamil grammar. As far as they are concerned, they are looking after an elephant.
Each module works on its own. Together they cover reading it, playing with it, singing it, and practising it until it sticks.

A foundation level for absolute beginners, twelve school levels, and a college level that splits into five streams. Every level has a theme for the year — ஒலியும் எழுத்தும், சொல்லும் செயலும், கவிதையும் கட்டுரையும் — and underneath the themes runs one Tamil grammar syllabus, sequenced level by level. Pick a level below and see its theme, what it covers, what a learner can do at the end of it, and which parts of the lab get them there.
Foundation. Sounds, letters and first words, for a learner meeting Tamil for the first time at any age. Grammar starts at Level 1.
The school ladder, one theme a year — from ஒலியும் எழுத்தும் at Level 1 to ஆய்வும் பாய்வும் at Level 12. The same twelve themes and the same grammar sequence the Payil textbooks follow, so Level 6 in the lab is Grade 6 in the book.
Four themes in one tier — பணித்தமிழும் கணித்தமிழும், சங்ககாலமும் எதிர்காலமும், மொழியியலும் அழகியலும் and முடிவிலித் தமிழ் — taken into Engineering, Medicine, Law, Arts and Business, because a medical student and a law student need different Tamil.
Nothing on this ladder is taught as a grammar lecture. A level arrives as songs, grammar and literature videos, games, Nooli books, the Pazhagu trainer and the rest of the smart tools — the grammar is the spine, not the surface. Level 14 arrives next year.
A child who reads beautifully but hesitates to speak looks nothing like one who does the opposite. We analyse each learner separately in every vertical, and the recommendation engine gives each of them what they actually need.
